il bicameralismo perfetto / perfect bicameralism

Il sistema parlamentare italiano e' ottimo. Una legge, per essere approvata definitivamente, deve essere approvata, senza modifiche, da entrambe le camere. Questo significa che ogni camera ha potere di controllo sull'altra. Questa e' democrazia.
Qualcuno dice che questo sistema e' lento. Ovviamente e' lento! Una legge non e' una barzelletta, va' fatta nel tempo che ci vuole. Le leggi servono allo Stato e non si possono fare in fretta! E' vero, invece, che il Parlamento viene assediato dai Parlamentari con un sacco di sciocchezze e giochi di potere.
Tutti i Parlamentari sono d'accordo che il sistema con cui si fanno le leggi in Italia va cambiato. Io non sono d'accordo, secondo me va' cambiato CHI fa' le leggi.

The Italian Parliament System is excellent. To approve a law, they have to approve it, without modifications, by both chambers. Each chamber has power of control on the other. This is democracy.
Somebody says that this system is slow. Of course it's slow! A law is not a joke, it needs to take its time. The State needs laws and you can't do them in a hurry! It is true, nevertheless, that the Parliament is besieged by Parliament Members themselves with a lot of silly things and power games.
All Parliament Members agree that the law-making system has to be changed. I don't agree. I think that we should change WHO makes the laws.

qualcosa di sinistra / something left winger

Mi aspettavo molto dal Governo Prodi. Prodi e' un professore universitario, quindi mi aspettavo un comportamento "decente" nei confronti della Ricerca e dell'Universita'. Mi sbagliavo.
L'istruzione e la ricerca non sono mai stati temi popolari per la politica ma sono normalmente considerati "di sinistra".
Oggi, il mio ringraziamento va al Prof. Valditara, che ha costretto il Governo Prodi ad aumentare i finanziamenti all'Universita' Italiana. Qual'e' la notizia? Il Prof.Valditara e' Senatore di Allenanza Nazionale.
L'On.Mussi (Ministro dell'Universita' e della Ricerca Scientifica) scomparso.

I expected a lot from Prodi's Government. Prodi is a Professor, therefore I expected a "decent" behaviour with respect to Research and University. I was wrong.
Education and research have never been popular topics for politics but they are normally considered "left winger".
Today, I want to thank Prof. Valditara, who forced Prodi's Government to increase finances for Italian University. What's the news? Prof. Valditara is Senator of "Alleanza Nazionale" (the first right wing italian party).
On.Mussi (Minister for Scientific Research and University) is missing.

fermate il calcio! / stop football!

Il calcio, in Italia, e' una cosa seria. Talmente seria che la gente muore per una partita. A volte, come oggi, si muore perche' un poliziotto spara per fermare una rissa. Bel risultato.
L'anno scorso, mori' un poliziotto. Il calcio fu fermato per due settimane, ci furono funerali di stato e tante parole.
Il calcio, ormai, muove un sacco di soldi ed un sacco di idioti che vanno a menar le mani. La parte sportiva e' minore (anche la qualita' del gioco non e' granche').
La classe politica prenda una posizione coraggiosa. Si fermi questo sanguinoso circo per un anno a partire da ora. Basta con le chiacchiere e con i morti della domenica pomeriggio!

In Italy, football is a serious thing. So serious that people die for a match. Sometimes, as today, people die because a policeman shots to stop a riot. Nice result.
Last year, a policeman was killed. Football was stopped for two weeks, there were funeral of State and a lot of words.
Football, nowadays, moves a lot of money and a lot of idiots who go there for fights. The sport part is minor (and the game quality is not excellent).
The politicians should take a brave position. Stop this bloody circus for a year starting now. Stop chats and sunday afternoon's deads!

L"energia nucleare in Italia / Nuclear energy in Italy

Vent'anni fa, il Popolo Italiano ha vietato l'Energia Nucleare nel nostro Paese.
Quella decisione fu presa pochi mesi dopo il tragico incidente di Chernobyl. Fu un criminale errore proporre quel referendum in quel momento perche' si gioco' sull'emotivita' della gente.
Il crimine viene dal fatto che non solo le centrali nucleari furono probite ma anche la ricerca su questo tipo di scienza. I promotori di quel referendum meritano il mio disprezzo.
Oggi si e' (finalmente) riaperto il dibattito su questo argomento. Un parlamentare (Angelo Bonelli) ha detto "questo tipo di energia implica per forze di cose la costruzione della bomba atomica". Un'offesa all'intelligenza. Questo personaggio siede nel Parlamento Italiano. E' come dire che costruire automobili porta a costruire carri armati!
Purtroppo non tutti hanno la fortuna di avere un cervello.

Twenty years ago, the Italian People has forbidden Nuclear Energy in our Country.
That decision was taken a few months after the tragic incident of Chernobyl. It was a criminal error to propose that referendum in that moment because they played with people's emotion.
The crime comes after the fact that not only nuclear powerplants were forbidden but also the research on this kind of science. The promoters of that referendum deserve my contempt.
Today (finally) the debate on this topic has started again. A Parliament Member (Angelo Bonelli) has said "this kind of energy implies the building of the atomic bomb". An offence to intelligence. This person seats in the Italian Parliament. It's like say that building cars leads to build tanks!
Unfortunately not everybody is so lucky to have a brain.

Il nostro astronomo / Our astronomer

Il comitato per la finanza di ESO e' un gruppo di persone che hanno il ruolo di decidere dove e come verranno spesi i soldi dell'Osservatorio.
Ieri i membri del comitato sono stati a La Silla, accompagnati dal Direttore dell'Osservatorio, i vice-direttori (uno di loro e' il Capo delle Operazioni Scientifiche di La Silla, cioe' il mio diretto supervisor) e l'ex vice-direttore. Io, con tre ingegneri, ho preparato lo "show", ovvero abbiamo preparato tre oggetti (una galassia, una nebulosa ed un ammasso glubulare) che hanno visto con l'oculare al telescopio da un metro.
Io non sono bravo a spiegare le cose ad un pubblico "normale" ma, stamattina, ho incontrato alcuni dei visitatori (tra cui l'ex vice-direttore dell'Osservatorio). Tutti mi hanno ringraziato calorosamente, sono rimasti molto felici ed uno mi ha definito "il nostro astronomo", che mi riempie d'orgoglio data la presenza di pezzi da novanta come il Direttore ed il Capo delle Operazioni Scientifiche di La Silla.
Una piccola soddisfazione.

The finance committee of ESO is a group of people who have the role to decide where and how the money of the Observatory will be spent.
Yesterday the members of the finance committee came to La Silla, together with the Director of the Observatory, his deputies (one of them is the Head of La Silla Science Operations) and his former deputy. I, together with three engineers, had to prepare the "show", i.e. we prepared three celestial objects (a galaxy, a nebula and a star cluster) to be "observed" with an eyepiece at the 1m-telescope.
I am not good to explain things to a "normal" audience but, this morning, I met some of the visitors (among them the former deputy of the Director of the Observatory). Everybody thanked me, they were very happy and one of them called me "our astronomer", which makes me feel proud given the presence of "big" people as the Director and the Head of Science Operations.
A small satisfaction.

Enzo Biagi

Enzo Biagi e' stato un uomo ed un giornalista immenso.
Ho sempre letto ed ascoltato le parole di Enzo Biagi con estrema attenzione. Ho sempre ammirato la semplicita' delle sue parole cosi' come la chiarezza delle sue frasi. Aveva un talento impareggiabile e leggere (o ascoltare) le sue parole e' sempre stato un piacere.
Non dimentichero' mai le serate passate con mio padre ad aspettare "Il fatto", la trasmissione piu' bella che io abbia mai visto. L'editto bulgaro, di cui Biagi e' stato vittima e che lo ha reso martire, rende ancora piu' speciale la vita di quest'uomo, spesa a difendere la liberta'.
Lo spirito di Enzo Biagi e' ora piu' libero che' mai.
Noi restiamo con il ricordo del suo umorismo, la sua cultura e quello sguardo sereno da nonno buono.

Enzo Biagi has been a great man and journalist.

I have always read and listened Enzo Biagi's words with extreme care. I have always admired the simplicity of his words as well as the clarity of his sentences. He had an unmatchable talent and reading (or listening) to his words has always been a pleasure.
I will never forget the evenings spent with my father to wait for "Il fatto" (="The fact"), the most beautiful transmission I have ever saw. The "bulgarian edict", of which Biagi has been victim and which made him a martyr, makes even more special the life of this man, spent to defend Freedom.
Enzo Biagi's spirit is, now, as free as never before.
We are left with the memory of his humour, his culture and that serene view as that of a good grandfather.
