Caro Babbo Natale,
come va?
Io sto bene, grazie.
Credo di essermi comportato bene quest'anno. Ho anche portato mamma a Capo Horn e non l'ho lasciata li'. L'Inter ha anche vinto lo scudetto ed io sono tornato in Chile. Per me e' stato proprio un bell'anno.
Per l'anno prossimo l'unica cosa che vorrei chiederti per me e' un contratto piu' lungo di un anno.
Mi piacerebbe anche vedere l'Italia governata da un quarantenne ed un po' di persone con un briciolo di intelligenza nei ruoli chiave di un sacco di istituzioni. Magari mi accontento di un trenino...

Dear Santa,
how are you?
I am fine, thanks.
I think I behaved well this year. I even brought my mum to Cape Horn and I didn't leave her there. Inter has won the "Scudetto" and I am back in Chile. For me it has been a very good year.
The only thing I want to ask you about next year is a contract a bit longer than one year.
I also would like to see Italy ruled by 40years old people and a bit of people with a bit of intelligence in the key-roles of a lot of institutions. Perhaps a toy train will do...

30 anni / 30 years

Il 19dicembre ho compiuto 30 anni. Quest'anno ho scelto di celebrare il mio compleanno a La Silla, lavorando. E' stata una scelta differente dai miei soliti compleanni. Si e' rivelata una scelta felice.
Un compleanno e' sempre un'occasione particolare, in ci si fa' i conti con il proprio presente e, soprattutto, con il proprio passato e le aspettative per il futuro. Credo che mi piaccia abbastanza il mio presente e che il mio futuro non e' mai stato cosi' ignoto ed eccitante come ora.
Ho avuto il piacere di festeggiare con persone straordinarie e sentire un sacco di affetto attorno a me.
Ho anche avuto la fortuna di avere il cielo piu' bello del mondo sopra la mia testa e di essere "Shift leader" nel miglior osservatorio del mondo in quel giorno.
Un grazie a tutti coloro che mi hanno fatto sentire bene quest'ultimo 19Dicembre.
A coloro che hanno avuto il coraggio di regalarmi un didjeridu, una minaccia: lo suonero' appena passerete per casa mia.

On the 19December I turned 30years old. This year, I have chosen to celebrate my birthday on La Silla, working. It has been a different choice from my typical birthdays. It turned out being a good choice.
A birthday is always a peculiar occasion, during which you face your present and, most of everything, your past and your expectations for the future. I think I quite like my present and my future has never been so unknown and exciting as today.
I had the pleasure to celebrate with extraordinary people and feel a lot of love around me.
I also had the luck to have the best sky of the world over my head and to be "Shift leader" in the best observatory of the world on that day.
A big thank to all of those who made me feel good this last 19December.
To all of those who dared presenting me with a didjeridu, a menace: I'll play it as soon as you'll come to my place.

moratoria alla pena di morte / moratorium to death penalty

L'assemblea generale delle Nazioni Unite ha finalmente approvato una moratoria universale della pena di morte (riportato solo sui siti italiani?!).
Le moderne democrazie hanno abbandonato da tempo questo odioso strumento tribale. Il mondo del ventunesimo secolo non si puo' permettere che uno Stato uccida un cittadino.
E' giunto il momento che anche Nazioni meno evolute da un punto di vista civile/sociale (Cina, Cuba, Stati Uniti d'America...) facciano questo grande passo nella modernita'.
Le Nazioni Unite mostrano la via verso il futuro, come fecero gia' sessant'anni fa con la Dichiarazione Universale dei Diritti dell'Uomo.

The general assembly of UN has finally approved a universal moratorium of death penalty (although it is only reported on italian websites!!).
Modern democracies have abandoned this odious tribal "tool" since long time. The world of the twentyfirst century can not accept that a Country kills a citizen.
It is time that also Countries less evolved from a civil/social point of view (China, Cuba, United States of America...) make this big step in modernity.
United Nations show us a path towards the future, as they did already sixty years ago with the Universal Declaration of Men's Rights.

La crociera a Capo Horn / The Cape Horn Cruise

Capo Horn (il punto piu' a Sud del continente americano) e' la prima sosta di una crociera di tre giorni. Il Capo e', in realta', un'isola di 6kmq. L'equipaggio della crociera e' stato molto bravo e siamo riusciti a sbarcare. L'isola e' carina ed e' una vera emozione riuscire ad essere in un posto cosi' importante e di cosi' oscura fama.
La seconda tappa e' Bahia Wulaia, un posto incantevole. Abbiamo fatto una breve camminata.
Il secondo giorno e' iniziato con la nave che si muoveva un sacco! Per fortuna, stando a letto, la cosa non era cosi' drammatica. Nel pomeriggio abbiamo fatto una gita in gommone per vedere due ghiacciai... onestamente, dopo aver visto il Perito Moreno, la prospettiva di "ghiacciaio" cambia molto.
Il terzo giorno, poco prima della fine della crociera, siamo stati a Isla Magdalena, famosa per una colonia di pinguini. E' stato molto divertente camminare in mezzo ai pinguini.
La crociera e' finita a Punta Arenas... e che modo migliore di festeggiare che una cena a base di "centolla" (un granchio gigante tipico della Patagonia)?

Una crociera unica, che mi restera' nel cuore... specialmente per la compagnia: mia mamma :-)

Cape Horn (the southernmost point of the American continent) is the first stop of a 3-days cruise. The Cape is actually a 6square-km island.
The crew of the cruise was very good and we managed to disembark. The island is nice and it's a big emotion to be able to be in such an important place with such a dark fame.
The second stop was Bahia Wulaia, an enchanting bay. We had a short hike.
The second day started with the boat moving a lot! Fortunately, staying in bed, it was not so dramatic. In the afternoon we had a trip on a rubber dinghy to see two glaciers... honestly, after having seen Perito Moreno, the perspective of a "glacier" is very different.
On the third day, shortly before the end of the cruise, we went to Isla Magdalena, which is famous for its penguins'colony. It was very funny to walk between the penguins.
Thre cruise ended in Punta Arenas... and what's a better way to celebrate than a "centolla" (a huge Patagonian crab) dinner?

A unique cruise, which I'll always have in my heart... especially for the company: my mum :-)

Ushuaia

Sono a Ushuaia (Argentina). Secondo gli Argentini, questo e´il posto piu´a sud del mondo.
E´un posto incantevole, il cibo e´speciale, la gente e´simpatica ed il tempo e´imprevedibile.
L´hotel in cui ci troviamo (io e mia mamma) e´incantevole. Si chiama ¨Los Cauquenes¨ed ha anche una spa... chi passasse da queste parti non si dimentichi il costume da bagno!
Domani prenderemo la nave che ci portera´alla fine del mondo: Capo Horn.

I am in Ushuaia (Argentina). According to Argentinians, this is the southernmost place in the world.
It´s a charmy place, food is special, people are friendly and the weather is unpredictable.
The hotel in which we are staying (my mum and I) is enchanting. It´s called ¨Los Cauquenes¨and it even has a spa... who passes by should better not forget a swimsuit!
Tomorrow we´ll get on our ship to go to the end of the world: Cape Horn.
