Deep Impact 2006 Conference (day 3)

Le attivita' sociali sono fondamentali durante una conferenza. E' il modo in cui si riesce a conoscere le persone in modo informale e, a volte, si riesce anche a cominciare qualche collaborazione. Sicuramente e' un'occasione migliore delle discussioni "ufficiali", in cui tutti cercano di sembrare "belli" davanti a tutti. Insomma, un modo di essere sinceri.

La gita ci ha portato a Waterloo, dove si e' svolta quella che, probabilmente, e' la piu' importante battaglia della storia contemporanea. Il posto e' molto "adattato ai turisti". E' strano vedere che, dove si trovava accampato il Duca di Wellington, oggi sorga un paese. Il posto ha ancora un grosso potere evocativo ed e' un'emozione gigantesca essere li' e pensare a quello che e' successo (e quello che ne e' seguito).

La cena e' stata eccellente. Tavolata con Taavi (e sua moglie) e un po' di americani (ed un belga... che parla con forte accento americano). Cibo ottimo, compagnia piacevole ed anche i due discorsi durante la cena sono stati apprezzati.

Insomma, stasera vado a letto felice di questa giornata di conferenza. Non faccio commenti sulla parte scientifica oggi perche'... aspetto domani :)

Social activities are fundamental during a conference. It's the way you can get to know people in an informal way and, sometimes, also to start collaborations. Surely it's a better occasion than "official" discussions, when everybody tries to look "nice" in front of everybody else. So, a way to be sincere.

The trip brought us to Waterloo, where they fought the battle which is likely to be the most important one of contemporary history. The place is very "turistic". It's strange to see that, where the Duke of Wellington had his camp, today there is a town. The place is still very suggestive and it's a gigantic emotioni to be there and to think to what has happened (and what came next).

Dinner was excellent. Table with Taavi (and his wife) and some americans (and a belgian guy... who speaks with a strong american accent). Great food, pleasant company and also the speeches (that's the thing people are usually afraid of) have been appreciated.

So, tonight I go to bed happy because of this conference day. I don't comment on the science today because... I wait until tomorrow :)
